Free Cell Phones For Veterans – The Breakdown

Free Cell Phones for Veterans - Lifeline Program

Lifeline Program

There is, in fact, a federally funded program that provides free cell phones for “low income” individuals. That is why there are many organizations claiming they can get you a free phone through the government.

The actual (and only) federal program that helps with getting a free phone is the “lifeline” program. It is a “low income” program. Being a veteran has nothing to do with the qualification process. Many of our veterans qualify for this program because they are low income. But many do not qualify. And months later they are hit with a bill for services they thought were free.

The lifeline program is supported by the Universal Service Fund. A fund all telephone companies pay into. You’ve probably seen the “universal service” fee on your monthly bills. Now you know what it is.

Please do not enroll in this program at a booth or other veterans event. You don’t need a third party service provider to do it for you. You can do it yourself.
