In a recent report by the Washington Post it was reported that new research is showing that vets are losing their homes and missing out on crucial benefits because they lack legal aid. In the same article, they report that nearly 50,000 veterans are sleeping on the streets each night. Why?

Because according to a recent study by the Department of Veterans Affairs, at least five out of the top 10 reasons leading to veteran homelessness can’t be solved without legal help.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

While most military branches offer limited forms of legal support to active military members, it’s actually the Department of Veterans Affairs that can help our veterans.

Their website provides a list of their free legal service clinics. You can also find your closest VA Veterans Justice Outreach Specialist there as well.

There is also a constantly updated list of organizations providing pro-bono legal services for veterans.

Is a nonprofit that specializes in providing legal help for military members, veterans, and their families.

They have a great database of forms and letters you can use to help in a number of situations. Additionally, they have a pretty decent search engine to find help in your local area.

The National Veterans Legal Service Program

The National Veterans Legal Service Program, or NVLSP, are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has worked since 1980 to ensure that the government delivers to our nation’s 25 million veterans and active duty personnel the benefits to which they are entitled.

The NVLSP has a great database of information and a list of a voluntary lawyer network.

They also operate the Lawyers Serving Warriors (LSW) Program. NVLSP’s Lawyers Serving Warriors® program offers pro-bono (meaning free legal advice for veterans) and free legal help with disability issues to veterans from all eras.

Where To Find Free Legal Advice For Veterans: The American Bar Association

The American Bar Association.

Every State has a bar association. The American Bar Association has over 400,000 members. They can help you find an attorney that specializes in your area of concern and can also help you find a lawyer that will work pro-bono.

Many veterans don’t know this. But with many State Bar Associations, lawyers, as part of their membership in the Bar, are required to perform so many hours of pro-bono work. So it always pays to ask.

As per the American Bar Association:

Model Rule 6.1 states that lawyers should aspire to render–without fee–at least 50 hours of pro-bono-publico legal services per year, with an emphasis that these services be provided to people of limited means or nonprofit organizations that serve the poor.”
